Walked a 5k Color Run

Over the past year or so I’ve watched friends in the “running culture” paste incredible pictures and videos on their social media. Lately, races/running events have developed ingenious themeing to encourage participation. For example, “zombie runs” are a common theme, and also I believe very practical…I always said the old reason for running was while getting chased.


Seriously, I remember one year I think in first or second grade, purposely walking the mile as slow as I could. In the summer before 9th grade I was more in shape because I was trying out for field hockey. When I didn’t make the team I decided I was going to do cross country/track (lasted for a week). At that point I was so conditioned that when the coach said to do 2 warm up laps around the track I didn’t even sweat.

However, moving off campus in the middle of my senior year at University, and holding desk jobs ever since have decreased my physical abilities. Therefore, when I saw the facebook event for this Life in Color Run I knew I had to get my friend to do it with me…I figured even walking is a start!


This race was a relaxed color run, the first in our area. The event was coordinated by a university club to partner with the local chapter of Children’s Miracle Network. The purpose of this race was to raise money to help purchase helicopter gear in order to fly babies to a more advanced hospital nearby in the event of an emergency.


On the heels of the Boston Bombing it was really neat to be able to experience the race culture first hand. Because of active friends I knew that the number was called a “race bib” and the sight of race tutu’s was not surprising.


What was surprising was seeing how the atmosphere and block party nature of the event can get you so excited that you actually want to run. If you’re unfamiliar with a color run, basically volunteers are at various stations (3 in our case) with colored paint powder very similar to baby powder and coat you with it. When my husband was describing this to one of his friends and were confused about the purpose of someone throwing powder at you. My husband theorized “it is so that way they run faster because they are angry.” What I can tell you is that it turns the walk/race into a game. We felt encouraged to run past those throwing powder at us maybe because running was less embarrassing than walking lol. I wore my “walk to defeat ALS” tshirt that I received from an ALS walk a couple of years ago. A friend’s mom had ALS, and the shirt read “walk because you can” due to the fact that ALS is a degenerative disease. I wore the shirt to honor his mom.








I wore a GoPro to the event, so I felt a little goofy, especially since I’d be walking. This seemed the best way to obtain footage from the event, didn’t want to get paint powder in either of my cameras. Husband had his own event that morning so I couldn’t even pose him at the end of the race.


In the end friend and I were covered in paint powder, and finished the 5k (3.1 miles) in about 55 minutes. Not bad for a start. This friend and I are more determined now to begin some sort of a running routine to be able to run our next race :0).

However, the GoPro footage taught me that I’ll need some extra work/practice in running. Throughout my years people have observed me running and commented that it is funny/awkward. Husband teases me incessantly about this, and uses it as a reason why I carry a firearm. My mother in law didn’t believe that I ran that badly until one visit she saw me quickly crossing a street and she almost doubled over in laughter. Well I almost cried watching the GoPro video clips and realizing that my awkward side to side gait was recorded via the camera. I hope to be able to work some video editing wizardry to hide this, but we’ll just have to see.
